Does Oil pulling technique for maintaining oral hygiene work?

image

The latest trend in the beauty market is a technique called ” oil pulling.
Oil pulling basically involves taking a tablespoon of oil in your mouth and swish it around for 20 minutes. Then spit it out.
The beauty gurus claim that it is the new magical  treat to cure all your Dental issues.
It is considered to be an old technique from ayurvedic medicine.

I have researched this technique enough to understand that it is nothing more than a fad. People are trying to fool themselves to prevent facing their fear. ( going to a dentist.)

There is no documented literature which suggests that oil pulling is a magical practice which pulls out toxins from your mouths.
Let’s get a few things out of the way.

(1) Our body does not have hidden poison gland which produce toxins. So we don’t need to detox our bodies. We have a special system called excretory system which throws out unwanted things from our body. So if you are a healthy individual, you need not follow a detox diet to feel better. Just eat well and exercise. That is enough to maintain your health!

(2) Your teeth cannot cleanse themselves. They need to be scrubbed by a brush. Hence brushing your teeth can never have a substitute. Don’t get trapped into alternative medicine claims and damage your teeth.
Oil will create a layer in your clean teeth to prevent new plaque from sticking to your teeth. If you swish normal tap water in your mouth for 20 minutes it will remove and dislodge same amount of food debris from between your teeth. Instead you could spend 10 minutes in brushing and flossing. A guranteed way to tackle decays than oil pulling.

(3) Cavities can’t cure themselves. They need to be manually excavated and filled. No oil or material in the world has ever actually scientifically cured decay.period. Beauty gurus are not doctors.

(4) Wellness is not health. Wellness is a mental state of wellbeing. You could have a terminal disease. But still meditation could give you a feeling of wellness. That does not cure the disease. It cures your mental discomfort towards it.

(5) Brushing ,flossing and Mouthwashes are tried and tested for several decades to prevent dental decays. So don’t stop using those practices. If you want to try alternative medicine use it after daily brushing as an additional practice. Not as a substitute.

(6) Please listen to your dentist. They understand oral hygiene more than beauty gurus.
